Civil Partnership

On 2 February 2018 the Civil Partnerships, Marriages and Deaths (Registration Etc.) Bill received an unopposed second reading. The Bill makes proposals for heterosexual couples to enter in to Civil Partnerships. Currently Civil Partnership is available to same sex couples only. The Court have previously rejected an application by a heterosexual couple to enter in to a civil partnership, leaving it to Parliament to change the law.

Couples who would like to be provided with the option of entering in to a Civil Partnership often say that they want to commit to their partner in a legal way, but do not wish to get married. It has been argued that Civil Partnership should not be available to same sex couples if it is not available to heterosexual couples. There are obvious human rights implications and it is clear that reform is required to deal with the current anomaly.
