Birdnesting: Why some separated couples are sharing the family home

Divorcing couples are choosing to alternate time spent at home in an unconventional living plan called birdnesting. It can be a good option for children and save money.

Within the agreement, both agreements take turns using the family home, typically every week, spending the other time in rented accommodation. Legal professionals explain that more clients are coming to them with these types of plans because this option is more affordable than trying to maintain two-family homes, and provides additional stability for the children.

Parents who have opted for this arrangement believe it makes things easier for the children, that while they experienced their parents splitting, they didn’t have to endure the change of moving between two houses.

While this arrangement has challenges, many parents highlighted how valuable it was for the kids. For it to work, adults believe you must have a good relationship with your ex.

According to the Law Society’s Family Law Committee, one main reason for the increasing popularity of this arrangement is the current economic climate. The group explains that mortgage rates influence these decisions significantly, encouraging more recently separated couples to explore this arrangement.

Other legal industry professionals supported this concept, explaining that while many are seeking consistency for the children in the early days of separation, it has now become a necessity for many families due to rising mortgage and rental costs.

While in some cases there have been logistical and financial challenges, most parents say they have never regretted the decision. The existing family finances are often critical to whether and how this arrangement can work. Those fortunate to have a second home that was previously retained are in a strong position to take this solution, but those who don’t have this option will likely rent an alternative property on a 12 month contract.
