Settlement Conferences

Some designated Family Judge (DFJ) areas are piloting settlement conferences. A settlement conference involves a Judge from the family court taking on role of inquisitor in order to assist parties to cooperate with a view to reaching agreement in relation to children matters. It is hoped that this approach will encourage parties to reach an agreement that is in the children’s best interest. Sir James Munby, President of the Family Division, has pledged his backing for this scheme stating that this is an approach “that is worth piloting in order to inform decisions on whether to take them further”.

On face value this seems like a very sensible idea and will encourage parents to work together in order to reach a decision that is best for the children which is no doubt the most important thing.
